This work is a counterpart to the well-known painting by Francesco Trevisani, now housed at the National Gallery of Ancient Art in Palazzo Barberini.
In this version, small images have been added in the lower right and left corners.
The Virgin Mary is depicted engaged in a dual gesture: with one arm, she tenderly cradles the sleeping infant Jesus, who is resting against her, his little hand resting on a red apple—a symbol of salvation (the apple alludes to original sin); with her other hand, Mary holds a book—presumably a prayer book—which she reads with intensity and great concentration.
Thus, both the human, physical, and spiritual dimensions of Mary are depicted here.
Having already undergone restoration and re-gilding in the past, the painting is presented in a period-style frame.
