Flemish School Circa 1700 "saint In Ecstasy"
Flemish school circa 1700. Oil on paper mounted on canvas "Saint in Ecstasy" unsigned. 44.2 X 32 cm. Flemish school.
Our painting is in the tradition of Flemish painting at the turn of the Grand Siècle. At this time, the Baroque influence of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and Antoine Van Dyck (1599-1641) remains prominent, but evolves towards a more marked realism in the tronies(head studies).
It could be Saint Francis Xavier (1506-1552), very often depicted with this skyward gaze and a simple black cassock. Flemish painting produced an enormous amount of Jesuit imagery during this period.
Modern patinated wood frame and veneer. Good condition.
3400 euros.
