Painter From Bourges. Paul Marguerita, “a Little Corner Of The Archbishop’s Garden”
Artist: Paul Marguerita
Painter from Bourges. Paul Marguerita, oil on canvas, “A Little Corner of the Archbishop’s Garden,” signed and dated lower left: MARGUERITA 27. 41 x 24 cm. French School.
Paul Marguerita (1886–1942) is the perfect example of a self-taught artist whose talent commands respect.
After joining the technical services department of the city of Bourges (Cher) in the early 20th century, it was thanks to his mastery of drawing, his artistic sensibility, and his knowledge of plants that he was promoted to head of the parks and recreation department and appointed landscape architect of his hometown.
The Bourges-based artist is the creator of the famous Jardin des Prés Fichaux. Not content with being a brilliant landscape architect, Marguerita also practiced oil painting as a knowledgeable amateur.
Our painting depicts a section of the Jardin de L’Archevêché, located at the foot of Saint-Étienne Cathedral. In it, one can see one of the monumental bronze vases sculpted by Louis-Léon Cugnot (1835–1894) to represent the four seasons, which adorn the flowerbeds of this renowned garden.
Using generous layers of paint applied in a distinctly Neo-Impressionist style, the artist masterfully conveys on the canvas her intense passion for landscape painting, even before the future inauguration of the Jardin des Prés Fichaux, which she designed.
Paintings by Marguerita are very rare on the market.
Modern wooden frame with gilded stucco. Good condition.
