François Joseph Navez (1787-1869) won the first grand prize for painting at the Academy of Ghent (Belgium) in 1812. He then went to Paris (France) where he was a student of Jacques Louis David (1748-1825) until 1816 and accompanied the neoclassical master in his exile in Brussels (Belgium). Navez is considered to be the founder of the modern Belgian classical Eole. Through the quality of his portraits, the classical style that characterizes them and the profound humanity that animates them, the Brussels painter announces the Romantic School in the making.
