Antique Painting Signed Giuseppe Canella Lecco Pier 1837
Artist: Giuseppe Canella
Oil on canvas. The signature, date, and title appear in the lower left corner.
Giuseppe Canella was one of the most important Veronese landscape and cityscape painters of the nineteenth century. He undertook numerous trips throughout Europe, from which he brought back glimpses and views of European cities, allowing him to study Flemish painting in particular at length; In 1835, he settled back in Italy and devoted himself to painting Italian landscapes, especially those of Lombard cities, which—due to the Flemish influence—were characterized by a clear departure from rigid classical cityscape painting and by the use of distinctive effects of light and color.
Although the painting presented here is signed and consistent with Canella’s work in terms of subject matter and painting style, it is stylistically less effective in its execution, thus casting doubt on its definitive attribution to the artist; it remains, however, a work of remarkable quality.
The painting is presented in a period-style frame.
