19th-Century Chinese Lacquer and Gold Box Set - Sewing Box / Toiletry Case

A very beautiful octagonal box with an undulating shape, made of black lacquer with polychrome decoration and gold leaf, dating from the 19th century (Chinese export piece for the European market, circa 1850–1880).

​It rests on four small carved feet. The entire piece is richly decorated on all sides with lively scenes featuring figures set in magnificent French-style and Chinese landscapes, framed by plant motifs and gilded arabesques.
​
​Upper flap: Opens to reveal a mirror built into the lid, as well as a removable compartmentalized tray in gilded and black lacquer, perfect for storing jewelry or sewing kits.
​Lower drawer: At the bottom, a secret drawer/writing desk opens to reveal a small, hinged tray decorated with lacquer.
​Lock openings: Features two original wrought-metal locks (delivered without keys).
​Condition:
Authentic piece with a beautiful patina from age. Some signs of wear, slight lacquer chips, and scuffs on the gilding consistent with its age and authenticity (see details in the photographs). Solid structure. Rare because it is complete with its bone utensils inside.
