"

Like a small, slender sun

The marigold*, bright and upright

Shines its gentle light

Over the familiar lawn

From which sudden fragrances burst forth…

O flowery heart, heart of the gardens! …

Mr. de Noailles**

"

* Marigold: here, the flower with its famous orange hue, associated with sorrow and mourning but also with hope and healing.

** “M” stands for “Countess Mathieu de Noailles.” She dropped the “M” from her signature during the 1900s–1910s, as her literary fame grew.
