Auguste Renoir - Large Autograph Signature In Black Gouache. 1918

Artist: Auguste Renoir

Auguste Renoir (1841–1919). Large autograph signature executed in black gouache.

Exceptional large-format signature in black gouache. A majestic and expansive signature by the master in black gouache, intended to illustrate the cover of the book *Renoir*, 1919.

Renoir painted his iconic signature to illustrate the cover of the book Renoir, an intimate and essential monograph first published in 1919 (Paris, G. Crès & Cie).

[September 1918]. 1/2 p. in-4. Restoration of a corner paper loss. Framed between two panes of glass with UV-protective and anti-reflective coatings.

Frame size: 30 x 36 cm / Sheet size: 14.5 x 21 cm / Signature: 18 cm

In late September 1918, at the request of his friend, the painter Albert André (1869–1954), Auguste Renoir sent his signature, executed in large format in black gouache across the entire width of a sheet. Albert André was then writing a book dedicated to Renoir, which he published in 1919; it was reprinted in 1923 and in an expanded edition in 1928 (Paris, G. Crès & Cie). The painter sent this signature along with a second one (in black chalk) as a proposal for the front cover and the title page. The black-chalk signature—simpler, more delicate, and easier to reproduce—was selected. Our signature, which is slightly wider and executed in gouache, offers depth, substance, and a striking presence.

An exceptional piece.

Included are: – Renoir, by André Albert (Georges Crès & Cie, Paris, 1923)
– A copy of Renoir’s letter to Albert André dated September 18, 1918, announcing the mailing of this signature.
- Certificate of authenticity (expert C.N.E and F.N.E.P.S.A)

"I’ll take care of your matter and send it to you in Laudun—a little lampshade and a signature, isn’t it? But I can’t guarantee the result, as I’m so exhausted. Yours, Renoir"
