Alfred de Vigny went to London with his wife Lydia at the end of 1838 to defend the interests of the estate of his father-in-law, who had just died. He took the opportunity to record his impressions of the city and the English, and frequented London's social circles, in particular the posh salon of the Comte d'Orsay, "archangel of dandyism" according to Lamartine, and his lover Lady Blessington at Gore House.
