Neo-renaissance Brooch-pendant In Gold, Amethyst, And Enamel - Vienna, 19th Century

A rare and superb Neo-Renaissance brooch-pendant in 14-karat gold.

At the center, a rectangular-cut amethyst with beveled edges is surrounded by an architecturally styled gold setting, embellished with enameled foliage, chimera heads, and Renaissance-inspired ornamental motifs.

The piece is enhanced with rubies, diamonds, and an oval pearl. Three pearls—likely fine pearls—in the form of pendants complete this composition, whose black, green, and reddish-brown enamels contrast elegantly with the yellow gold and the deep purple of the amethyst.

With its rich decoration, the combination of enamels and gemstones, and its Renaissance inspiration, this piece follows in the tradition of Viennese historicist jewelry from the second half of the 19th century. Its craftsmanship evokes the creations of the great Viennese workshops of that period, notably Hermann Böhm, Hermann Ratzersdorfer, and the Köchert house, although a precise attribution cannot be established at this time.

The piece retains its convertible mechanism, allowing it to be worn as either a brooch or a pendant. The pin and its clasp, made of 18-karat gold, were likely added later to complement the original brooch mechanism.

Austro-Hungarian work, Vienna, second half of the 19th century.
