Antique German Porcelain Plaque “gute Nacht” After Georg Hom, Kpm ?, 19th Century

A particularly fine German porcelain plaque, dating from the late 19th century, depicting a young woman illuminated by candlelight and entitled “Gute Nacht” (Good Night), after the German painter Georg Hom (1838–1911).

The young woman holds a chamber candlestick, the warm candlelight illuminating her face, neck and white blouse against the rich dark background. The quality of the painting is excellent, particularly the subtle modelling of the face and the remarkably effective treatment of the candlelight.

The reverse of the porcelain plaque itself is inscribed “Gute Nacht / nach G. Hom. / Vervielfältigung verboten” (“Good Night / after G. Hom / reproduction prohibited”). It also retains old inventory or collection labels.

A very attractive example of the celebrated German tradition of finely painted porcelain plaques.

Dimensions: 18 × 13 cm.
