A 7 cm miniature medallion depicting an episode from the Odyssey, probably inspired by an Italian Renaissance engraving.
Despite its small size, this composition is remarkably elaborate, bringing together some twenty figures, around ten horses and several ships in a dramatic depiction of the disaster of Ulysses’ fleet.
Ulysses can be seen in his boat, while Neptune rides his expressive horse amid turbulent winds and waves.
This finely detailed piece was probably produced in the 19th century using an electroforming process, with a copper finish.
