Antique Châtelaine, Restored.

Thisstunning chatelaine is made of pomponne; it is adorned withstacked plates, openworked and finely chiseled with flowers, floralscrollwork, and encircled by a serpent biting its own tail. The firstplate, which is larger and serves as a hook, is adorned in the centerwith the same design; two chains ending in a small carabinerare attached to the main element. The chatelaine, the successorto the clavandier, became in the 18th century what we would calltoday a fashion accessory; transformed into a piece of jewelry and worn on thebelt, it could be made of pomponne, silver, or gold, adorned withgemstones, miniatures, enamel, or porcelain plaques; itwas used to carry various small items, such as scissors, a thimble,a salt shaker, a seal, a key, and almost always a watch.In good overall condition, this chatelaine has retained its beautifulgilding.
