Pair Of Empire-style Candlesticks In Gilded Bronze And Cut Crystal—early 19th Century
A pair of Empire-period candlesticks combining chased and gilded bronze with beautiful cut crystal elements.
They rest on a slightly domed circular base, accented around the rim by a frieze of stylized leaves. The base of the shaft is adorned with a second frieze of palmettes and a finely gadrooned band.
The tapered shaft features, in its central section, a large cut-glass sleeve decorated with diamond-point motifs, allowing the inner gilded bronze core to be seen through the glass. Its lower section features a fluted pattern, while the upper section is adorned with a band chiseled with palmette motifs.
The slightly flared bowls are topped by large circular saucers with finely striated rims.
The combination of cut crystal and gilded bronze, as well as the use of palmette and gadroons motifs, are characteristic of the Neoclassical style that developed during the Consulate and the Empire.
