Sebastian Dadler (1586–1657) Solid Silver Wedding Medal, Ca. 1636
A rare and important solid silver wedding medal, attributed to the famous medalist
Sebastian Dadler, made in Danzig (Gdańsk) around 1636.
Large in diameter, it features exceptionally rich decoration on both sides, rendered in high relief.
On the obverse, a standing couple, accompanied by Cupid, join hands with a padlock supporting a small altar surmounted by two flaming hearts.
A hand holding Cupid’s bow appears above; a flower-filled meadow completes the composition.
On the reverse, two palm trees frame two interlaced hands holding flowers, beneath the radiant dove of the Holy Spirit.
Two birds joined in a ring appear in the foreground, against a backdrop of an urban landscape.
Both sides are surrounded by Latin inscriptions celebrating marital union, love, and work.
Sebastian Dadler’s “SD” signature is visible on the reverse, at the base of the left palm tree, beneath the bouquet of flowers.
