Barrel with square sections tapering to a round shape, monogrammed “FB” on top and marked “X 43747” on the left side.
Retractable front sight.
Steel breech, marked “MANUFACTURE IMPERIALE St Etienne” and “Mle 1866” on the left side.
Sliding hammer.
Long-stock walnut stock.
Steel sight rail.
Two grenadier slings.
Stock stamped “F 48313” and bearing the manufacturer’s acceptance stamp.
Inspection hallmarks.

The Chassepot Model 1866 cavalry carbines, Series X, were produced in Saint-Étienne from rejected but still usable parts. An order for 1,500 units was placed in 1873, later increased to 1,550; they were intended for training cavalry regiments.
