The “Chinese-style” decoration on Bayeux porcelain from the Gosse period (1849–1878) is characterized by hand-painted motifs inspired by the East, depicting polychrome Asian figures, children playing in a park, apple blossoms, birds, and butterflies.
- Gosse Period: From October 10, 1849 (the date François Gosse purchased the factory at auction) until 1878, marking the artistic golden age of production before the Morlent family took over.
- Influences: Initially strongly inspired by the Far East and the aesthetic of designers such as Jacob Petit, the production incorporated polychrome designs accented with gold, blue backgrounds, or gilded handles known as “bois morts.”
- Evolution: The scenes featuring Chinese figures gradually evolved into standardized botanical motifs (apple blossoms) beginning in 1870 under the direction of Paul Gosse, due to competition and the cost of Oriental imitations.
- Use: Given its small, notchless lid, this is most likely a jar for rouge or ointment or a small apothecary bottle.
- Made of Bayeux porcelain, the barrel-shaped form with raised hoops is typical of the 19th century and highly sought after when paired with “Chinese-style” decoration.
