The work reflects the era’s fascination with the Spanish Romantic movement; here, the painter depicts a young Andalusian woman wearing a black lace mantilla and adorned with pink flowers in her hair.
Attributes: She delicately holds a slightly opened green fan in the foreground.
The title “ANDALOVSE” is visible in the lower right corner of the composition.

Emmanuel van den Bussche (also known as Jean-Emmanuel Van den Bussche or Joseph Emanuel Van den Bussche); a 19th-century Belgian painter, born on December 24, 1837, in Antwerp and died on August 15, 1908, in Watermael-Boitsfort.

Died: August 15, 1908, in Watermael-Boitsfort, Belgium.
Occupation: painter, visual artist, and art teacher.
Education and influences: A student at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance of Nicaise de Keyser, he was strongly influenced by Antoine Wiertz.
Artistic career and style: He devoted himself primarily to historical painting and genre scenes, as well as commissions for religious and secular murals.
Honors and awards: won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1863.
Teaching: He became a professor at the Antwerp Academy in 1872, and later at the Antwerp Higher Institute of Fine Arts in 1886.
Exhibitions: He regularly exhibited at the Paris Salons (1867, 1868, 1878, 1880) and at the Paris World’s Fairs (1878, 1889). His works continue to appear occasionally at major auction houses such as Drouot.
