'pierrot And Colombine - Commedia Dell'arte,' Large Signed Etching, Ca. 1920

Large figurative etching depicting Pierrot and Colombine, two iconic figures of the Commedia dell’arte. Dimensions: 77 x 62 cm (framed).

One of only 25 prints made, this one is numbered 20/25 and signed in pencil in the lower margin; the signature reads "Regnart," perhaps Victor Regnart....

The artist plays on the contrasts between the deeply inked areas (mask, hair, and ribbons) and very fine hatching and engraved lines to render the faces, hands, and fabrics. The treatment, quite free and expressive, gives the work an almost photographic quality while retaining the highly graphic character characteristic of etching.

The composition, with its particularly close framing, features Colombine in the foreground, her face concealed behind a large black mask, wearing a soft cap and wrapped in a loose, tied costume. Behind her stands Pierrot, looking pensive, his cheek resting in his hand. The poses of the two figures, their proximity, and the interplay of their gazes lend the scene an atmosphere that is at once intimate, theatrical, and slightly melancholic.

The engraving is preserved in a particularly charming vintage condition, with a few pinholes and foxing spots visible on the paper. Restoration or cleaning could be considered to mitigate these marks, but we have deliberately chosen not to intervene in order to preserve its character, its patina, and the authenticity of its current condition.
