Oil on cardboard, signed lower left.
Dimensions: 46 x 55 cm
With frame: 64 x 73 cm
Here we see the artist’s distinctive technique: thick, creamy paint applied with a brush and sometimes with his fingers, in a subdued palette of browns, grays, and greens.
A student of architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, he moved to Paris, where he became friends with Pierre Laprade, with whom he founded a shared studio.
After Laprade left, he married the painter Émilie Charmy.
He began exhibiting in 1902 at the Salon d’Automne, the Salon des Indépendants, and the Société nationale des beaux-arts, but it was particularly at the 1926 Retrospective of the Independents that he gained recognition with the paintings My Grandmother, Landscape in the Dauphiné,Landscape in Auvergne, View of Notre Dame, Games, and Palette and Brushes.
