Madonna And Child – Susse Frères

An important sculpture depicting the Virgin and Child, crafted from burnished bronze with a dark patina and finely chiseled. The composition depicts the Virgin standing, elegantly draped in wide, flowing robes with deep folds, with the Child resting on her arm and looking affectionately toward his mother.
The work is inspired by a famous composition by Alessandro Algardi (1598–1654), one of the leading figures of Italian Baroque sculpture, whose work was characterized by a refined formal approach and a particular attention to the softness of the drapery and the composure of the figures.
The sculptural rendering, enhanced by a dark brown patina and chiseled detailing, effectively highlights the details of the robes, hair, and faces, lending the work as a whole a remarkable sense of textural depth.
The sculpture bears the signature and mark of the renowned French foundry Susse Frères, one of the most important manufacturers of artistic bronzes in the 19th century, particularly prized for the high technical quality of its castings and for its collaborations with leading sculptors and modelers.
