While Mathurin MOREAU created numerous monumental statues, he also sculpted statuettes full of charm and delicacy, such as this little girl in a shirt, kneeling on a thick cushion with large pom-poms, her hands clasped, her gaze turned toward the One to whom she entrusts her soul and her day.

Jean-Baptiste MOREAU, Hippolyte MOREAU, Auguste MOREAU, François-Hippolyte MOREAU, Louis-Auguste MOREAU, Mathurin MOREAU … and even Jean-Mathurin MOREAU … enough to make one a bit confused! All these MOREAUs belong to the same family; all of them—with the exception of the last one, an architect—are sculptors. A dynasty of sculptors that originated in Dijon.

In 1841, when he was 19 years old, he won a departmental prize—an annual stipend of 800 francs for three years—which allowed him to move to Paris, where he was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts. He joined the studio of Jules RAMEY (1796–1852) and Auguste DUMONT (1801–1884). The following year, he won second Grand Prix de Rome. He tried unsuccessfully for the next three years to win the First Prize, but with success now coming his way, he devoted himself to his career. Beginning in 1843, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français.
The jury of the 1855 World’s Fair awarded *L’Été* a second-class medal.
