Large Chalice And Paten Made Of Silver, Partially Gilded – Paris, 1809–1819

An important chalice with its paten, crafted in Paris between 1809 and 1819, made of solid silver of the first standard (950 ‰), partially vermeilled with mercury gilding from the time of its creation.

The flared cup rests in a remarkable openwork base, embossed and finely chased. It is adorned with three medallions depicting sacred figures, set within a lavish Eucharistic composition featuring ears of wheat, bunches of grapes, vine branches, and foliage.

The stem, with its distinctive architectural design, is punctuated by beaded and twisted rings. Its large ovoid knot features an elegant decoration of lanceolate leaves arranged in superimposed registers.

The broad, stepped circular base is embellished with three scenes from the Passion of Christ, rendered in relief within oval medallions. One depicts the Crucifixion: Christ beneath the inscription INRI, a figure kneeling at the foot of the cross, and Jerusalem depicted in the background. Grapevines, ears of wheat, water leaves, and rosettes complete this exceptionally rich composition.

Of particular note is the skillful alternation between white silver and mercury-gilded surfaces, all of which are entirely original. This deliberate contrast highlights the reliefs, accentuates the depth of the engraving, and lends the piece as a whole a remarkable visual presence.

The set is preserved in its rare original box, lined with black and trimmed with red felt, specially compartmentalized to hold the chalice and its paten. Despite some external wear due to age, it retains its interior layout, removable tray, retaining ribbon, and clasps.
