Georgy Alexandrovitch Lapchine (1885–1950) Fishing Boats In France, 1930s

A mature work by Georgy Lapchine, created during his period of continuous artistic production on the French Riviera. The painting depicts a sandy beach with fishing boats resting near a wooden pier, bathed in soft evening light. The crystal-clear atmosphere, the calm sea, and the subtle balance of tones combine to create a poetic image of the Mediterranean coastline. Through the characteristics of the landscape, the artist depicted the sandy shore of the Bay of Cannes, where he painted from life on several occasions.

Lapchine employs broad, confident brushstrokes, combining the academic rigor of the Moscow school with the freedom of French plein air painting. His palette, based on harmonies of ochre, gold, and blue, captures the twilight light and the shifting reflections on the water.
