Paul Alfred Marie Daxhelet, born November 25, 1905 in Liège, son of Paul Joseph Hubert Daxhelet and Louise Marie Céline Crahay, and died October 3, 1993 in Liège, was a Belgian painter and engraver. Trained at the Liège Academy of Fine Arts, Paul Daxhelet developed a body of work in the 1930s dominated by sporting themes, particularly boxing, which he also practiced. After the Second World War, Daxhelet became the painter of colonial exoticism; from his numerous travels to the Belgian Congo, then to India, the Far East, South America, Polynesia, and Senegal, he brought back sketches and drawings from which he derived, in multiple variations, paintings dominated by color and movement.
