Large Standing Bowl Made Of Canton Porcelain And Gilded Bronze - Napoleon III Period

A large, mounted bowl serving as a centerpiece, consisting of a Canton porcelain basin with polychrome “Famille Rose” decoration and a lavish French gilded bronze mount.

The porcelain features the characteristic decoration of so-called “Canton Rose” pieces, produced in China for export during the second half of the 19th century.

The bowl is painted with large panels featuring court figures in palace interiors, alternating with compositions of birds, butterflies, peonies, and flowering branches. The entire design stands out against a lush floral background enhanced by particularly luminous polychrome glazes. A circular medallion adorned with a bird among flowers highlights the center of the composition.

The bowl is set in an elegant French mount of chiseled and gilded bronze. The rim is accented by a row of pearls and flanked by two large openwork handles decorated with foliage.

It rests on a fluted pedestal topped by an architecturally styled Louis XVI base, adorned with rows of pearls, laurel leaves, rosettes, and foliage motifs.

The contrast between the richness of the Canton enamels and the neoclassical design of the setting perfectly illustrates the European taste for mounted Chinese porcelain in the 19th century.

Good overall condition. The porcelain shows no apparent damage on the visible parts. Signs of wear and a patina from use on the gilding of the setting. Since the reverse side of the porcelain is partially concealed by the setting, a complete examination would require disassembly.
