Object description :

"Garouda In Polychrome And Gilded Wood, India, First Half Of The 20th Century"
The Polychrome and Gilded Wooden Garuda Eagle, India, First Half of the 20th Century.

A very beautiful Indian statue dating from the first half of the 20th century, representing Garuda, the eagle of Vishnu.
He is depicted in a protective yet almost menacing pose.
He is adorned with a crown and numerous jewels. He is primarily green and polychrome with his original gilding.
He is carved from a single piece of wood; only the finely crafted wings and tail have been added later. There are a few minor losses to the toes, but these are insignificant.
Garuda is a bird-like creature from Hindu mythology that blends eagle and human characteristics.
He is the mount (vahana) of Vishnu and appears on the god's banner.
Garuda represents birth and the sky, and is the enemy of all serpents.

A very beautiful antique representation of Garuda.
