Zacharie Astruc was born in Angers in 1833. After beginning his career as a journalist, he turned to art criticism, notably reviewing the Salons and championing the Realists, represented by Édouard Manet, Henri Fantin-Latour, Henri Legros, and Carolus-Duran. As a contributor to the development of Japonism in France, he embarked on an artistic career in the late 1860s, painting primarily in watercolor, which led to his participation in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874. He regularly exhibited at the official Salon, first as a painter and later as a sculptor.
He died in 1907 in Paris.
