Art Nouveau Earthenware Basin.

This large earthenware basin from thelate 19th century features a rich, exuberant decoration, characteristic of Art Nouveau; it consists of largeflowers painted in polychrome withinand twisted, alternating with floral motifs in shades ofgray on a beige background; the whole is enhanced by borders andarabesques painted in gold. On the reverse side is theJapanese-style signature of the famous Keller & Guerin company. The factory,located in Lunéville, was managed by the Keller andGuerin families from 1786 to 1923; numerous Art Nouveau artistscontributed to the design of the ceramics produced by themanufactory; Émile Gallé, Louis Majorelle, and Edmond Lachenal creatednumerous plant-inspired designs in the purest“Nouille” style. Our bowl, which bears theJapanese-inspired KG signature in use after 1880, is a perfect example.
