Pair Of "pigeon-throat" Opaline Glass Vases, 19th Century.
These pink opaline—or "hortensia"—vases are adorned with a white snake featuring gilded scales, coiled around the neck with its head raised. The wide, flared rim is scalloped and accented with a gilded line. The bodies rest on a gilded torus base. This distinctive and rare color, highly prized by collectors, is known as *gorge de pigeon* (pigeon's throat) or *hortensia* (hydrangea); it is achieved by adding gold salts to the glass mixture. Dating from circa 1830–1840. Heights: 23.5 cm and 22.7 cm.
