Slate Surface Globe By George Philip & Son, 1930s–1940s

A rare educational globe produced by George Philip & Son in the 1930s and 1940s, mounted on an inclined stand with brass fittings secured to a Bakelite base.
The globe is made of wood fiber/cardboard and plaster, then coated with a special matte black paint that allowed users to add information, trace routes, and mark borders using colored chalk.
George Philip was a cartographer and map publisher.
He founded the company in 1834 in Liverpool.
He had a son also named George.
By the end of the 19th century, Philips was producing globes in collaboration with other British manufacturers.
In the early 1900s, the company moved its headquarters to Fleet Street in London, and in 1902 it began producing globes on its own, thanks in part to the establishment of the “London Geographical Institute,” a large factory for the production of maps, atlases, and globes.
The globe is in good condition; it is original with no cracks but shows some signs of wear from use.
