"Alpina" pocket watch.

The history of Alpina begins with a company founded in 1883 in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, Switzerland.
Its founder, Gottlieb Hauser, co-founded the Swiss Watchmakers’ Union with other independent watchmakers from the Winterthur region. Initially, production focused on the assembly of components, but Alpina soon became a manufacturer, producing movements in-house.
Starting in 1901, the Alpina brand began appearing on high-end watches. Between 1909 and 1922, Alpina expanded its production by opening factories in Bienne, Geneva, Besançon, and Glashütte.
It entered into competition with A. Lange & Söhne, which felt threatened and sought to prevent Alpina from conquering the German market, under the pretext that too many components were produced outside of Germany. During World War I, supplies from Germany were restricted, leading to A. Lange & Söhne’s victory. In 1917, the “Union Horlogère” company was officially dissolved. After World War I, Alpina began to conquer the foreign market, with retail outlets ranging from Lisbon to Copenhagen and Moscow.
It thus became a leading brand in Europe.
The emergence of low-cost mass-market products also threw Alpina Watch International SA into crisis, leading to the arrival in 1972 of German investors who acquired all of its shares. Despite everything, Alpina managed to re-emerge in 2002 thanks to its acquisition by Frédérique Constant SA.
In 2006, thanks to its new production facility in Geneva, Alpina successfully resumed production.
