Rare "DURET" painter's box containing watercolor paints.
Late 19th century.
Duret was a historic French company active in Paris during the 19th century, specializing in the production of paints and art supplies.
The label is particularly interesting because it documents the transfer of ownership of the company.
The original company was Duret Ainé, based in Paris.
Subsequently, management passed to Duret et Fils & Faucher.
The text on the label highlights the use of non-toxic paints in pans approved by the health authorities of the time, an important innovation in an era when pigments contained toxic substances such as lead or arsenic.
It also mentions 22 gold, silver, and bronze medals, including awards won at world’s fairs.
The box is made of rosewood with brass decorations.
