Asian Sculpture – Eight Figures In Conversation – China, 19th Century

Rare and very interesting Chinese sandstone sculpture group, dating from the 19th century, depicting eight figures gathered in a lively scene of conversation and entertainment.

The particularly lively composition features several Chinese scholars and figures arranged on a naturalistic base evoking a gnarled tree trunk.

In the center, two figures appear to be gathered around a board game, while the others converse, observe the scene, or hold various objects.

One of the figures is notably depicted playing a flute.

The modeling is remarkable for the variety of poses, expressions, and costumes.

The deliberately subdued color palette combines the natural tones of brown stoneware with lighter elements—notably certain garments and accessories—creating a lovely contrast.

The base itself plays a full part in the composition, with its appearance of root or gnarled wood, giving the whole piece a particularly original and dynamic form.

A rare and highly decorative piece, notable for the richness of its composition and the delicacy of its numerous small figures.
