Manifesto Of Surrealism – First Edition. 1924 – André Breton
André Breton – Manifesto of Surrealism. Soluble Fish. First edition, Éd. du Sagittaire, published by Simon Kra, 1924.
In-12, paperback. First edition, as originally published, of the essential literary and artistic manifesto with its famous orange cover, initially intended to serve as a preface to the collection of automatic writings Soluble Fish.
Covers show no discoloration; binding is solid. Yellowed endpapers and untrimmed edges with normal wear and tear. Slight normal wear on the edges and corners. Interior in particularly fresh condition.
Proof marked “printed” on October 15, 1924; fictitious notation of a “second edition” on the cover—a common practice in those years aimed at creating the illusion of immediate success to boost sales. For this genuine first edition from 1924 of The Surrealist Manifesto, Simon Kra took these fictitious notations as far as falsely stating it was the fifth edition; all of these constitute the first edition.
