Madame Dubasty—portrait Of A Man, A Prominent Figure, From The Restoration Period—signed, Oil On Canvas

Early 19th-century French School; portrait of a notable or aristocrat during the Restoration, dressed in a black frock coat, white waistcoat, white shirt, and a fine white cotton tie. He wears his hair in the “Titus” style, still in fashion during the Empire. The man is well painted; his distinctive features are recognizable, and the skin tone is skillfully rendered. Oil on canvas, presented in a beautiful, wide Empire-style frame made of wood gilded with gold leaf. The portrait is signed “Madame Dubasty” on the left. Restoration period, circa 1820.

Madame Dubasty is the wife of Joseph Dubasty, whom specialized sources indicate worked at the Palais-Royal alongside his wife, who was herself a miniaturist. The Louvre also cites this information in an entry dedicated to another female painter: Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard notes that “Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dubasty” worked together at the Palais-Royal. Joseph Dubasty is generally considered to have been active from around 1808 to 1842. He was based at the Palais-Royal galleries, No. 148, and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1833 to 1837. His clientele included, notably, officers of the Empire and the upper middle class of the Restoration period. Joseph Dubasty and his wife used very similar signatures; often, only the presence of “Madame” or “Mme”—as seen in our portrait—allows the work to be attributed to his wife.

A beautiful salon portrait, very well executed and set in an attractive frame. Ideal for complementing an early 19th-century neoclassical interior.

In very good condition; the painting has been cleaned (on its original canvas), and the gold-leaf frame has been cleaned by our gilder.
