Presumed Portrait Of The Marquise De Saint-germain – French School, C. 1800
Oil on canvas depicting a seated noblewoman wearing a brown dress adorned with lace and brocade featuring floral motifs. The understated composition, neutral background, and meticulous rendering of the fabrics place this work within the French tradition of aristocratic portraiture from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A handwritten inscription on the back of the stretcher reads: “Marquise de Saint-Germain, sister of Jacques de la Barr de Vessières, Marquise de Larriveau.” The painting has been restored. It exhibits a network of craquelure indicative of its age. The stretcher has been reinforced. The painting is set in a gilded frame showing some signs of wear.
