- This depiction of the Celestial Court strikingly illustrates the dogmatic rigidity that characterized Peruvian viceregal painting in the 17th and 18th centuries. In this context, the transposition of Counter-Reformation dogmas served not only an educational purpose but also an urgent need to consolidate Catholic orthodoxy through a visual display of unquestionable theological power. The depiction of the Holy Trinity presiding over a space filled with angelic hierarchies thus becomes a doctrinal instrument in which each figure fulfills a specific pedagogical function, rigorously delineating the geography of Heaven.

Beyond its overtly devotional dimension, the work is fully in line with the colonial fascination with eschatological themes and the militant order of the cosmos. The schools of Cuzco and Lima showed a keen interest in angelology and the triumph of the Faith, conceiving the heavenly court as a perfectly organized and hierarchical spiritual army. Here, the dense mass of clouds serves as a mystical rampart where legions of angels—some musicians, others in perpetual prayer—flank the divine throne to reaffirm the invincible power of the triumphant Church.
