Spanish School (1950s) - The Roofs Of Segovia

- Oil on panel.

- Contemplating Segovia from on high is not a matter of distancing oneself, but of witnessing the mineral decomposition of an original Castile that refuses to dissolve into the servitude of official dogma. In the postwar period, Spanish painting of “internal exile” found in the landscape of the Meseta much more than a mere exercise in topography: the possibility of a silent rebellion against the monolithic nature and bombast of the dictatorship. This brutal realism of the land—the arid limestone whites, the ochre of the clay, and the sharp silhouette of the cathedral and Romanesque bell towers—blends here with the rigorous discipline of a Neocubism inherited from Vázquez Díaz; the avant-garde does not burst onto the scene here in the guise of cosmopolitan agitation, but as a clandestine geometric structure, a skeleton of rotating volumes and blind planes that underpin the landscape’s memory. The houses are not painted; they are built onto the canvas like shattered stone blocks, transforming the austere material of the plateau into a refuge of plastic resistance. Thus, between the weight of atavistic stone and the silent fracture of volume, this Segovia seen from above becomes the pinnacle of a painting that, by stripping away ornamentation to reach the earth’s very framework, manages to speak the truth in an era suffocated by lies.
