18th Century Italian Painting, Bathsheba At Her Bath

COD 11463

An important Italian painting from the first half of the 18th century. A monumental oil on canvas artwork with a biblical subject, it depicts the famous episode of Bathsheba at her bath. The young protagonist, half-naked and surrounded by maids, is captured during an intimate moment. In the background, we glimpse King David, strolling on the terrace of his palace, when he catches sight of the captivating Bathsheba, wife of the soldier Uriah. A relationship develops between the two, and she becomes pregnant. David then recalls Uriah from the army, intending to let him spend time with his wife so he can claim paternity of the child. However, Uriah wants to return immediately to the front to join his comrades, and the King makes a very harsh decision: he writes a letter to the army commander, entrusting Uriah with delivering the message containing his condemnation: the order is clear: put Uriah on the front lines and thus let him die.

The painting stands out for its quality of execution and composition, its chromatic harmony, and its extraordinary theatricality. The warm tones, combined with the refinement of the flesh tones and draperies, make this painting a work of strong visual and decorative impact. Particularly effective is the contrast between the luminosity of the protagonist and the surrounding darker areas, rendered with refined chiaroscuro. The kneeling servant introduces a note of realism and dynamism, while the figures at the sides contribute to the construction of a balanced and profound visual narrative. The large crimson curtain acts like a theatrical curtain, opening the view onto a scene of great classical elegance. The protagonist emerges with extraordinary luminosity from the dark background, while the rich golden dress and the marvelous draperies contribute to creating a striking decorative effect. The presence of the peacock in the foreground is particularly striking, a symbol traditionally associated with beauty and royalty, inserted here as a sophisticated allegorical reference to the theme of seduction and the fragility of passions. In the background, the garden with its fountain, cypress trees, and monumental architecture amplify the aristocratic and cultured character of the entire representation. The artwork reveals a late Baroque Northern figurative culture, characterized by elegant formal idealizations, soft flesh tones, and meticulously rendered fabrics.

The quality of the pictorial application and the monumental size suggest a prestigious original destination, likely a noble palace or castle. Thanks to its imposing size, it is ideal for large spaces, state rooms, historic homes, or luxury hotel lobbies. The spectacular 20th-century frame is carved, lacquered, and gilded, and features elaborate decoration, with some signs of aging. The artwork has already been restored with re-lining, replacement of the stretcher, and restoration of color in some areas. It has some minor paint loss in the lower left corner (see photo). Overall, it is in good condition. Internal dimensions: H 196 x W 296 cm.
