Relic Of Saint Gaudence, Martyr - 18th Century

In a white-and-gold-painted wooden shrine, surmounted by a hearten circled by a depiction of the Holy Crown, is preserved an important relic ex-ossibus of Saint Gaudentius, Martyr. It is setwithin an original design of gilded filigree, polychrome glass beads, and pearls, forming an elegant and rare chalice-shaped motif.
This is not Saint Gaudentius of Novara, as he did not dieas a martyr, just like Saint Gaudentius of Brescia. It is undoubtedly Gaudentius, bishop, who was martyred under Valentinian I in 364 in Arezzo, Tuscany.
On the reverse are two wax seals.
A piece from Tyrol, very representative of the so-called “Klosterarbeiten” (monastic works) from this vast region that encompassed parts of Austria, southern Germany, and northern Italy.
