Melchizedek And The Virgin - 19th Century
A rare depiction of the parents of the Prophet John the Baptist, uncle and aunt of Jesus. Our two figures are carved in the round from softwood. Zechariah is recognizable by his attribute, the censer, as he was a priest in the Temple of Jerusalem. Opposite him, an elderly, veiled holy woman in a pose of prayer or contemplation perfectly represents Saint Elizabeth. A spectacular 19th-century work in the style of the late Middle Ages.
