Melchizedek And The Virgin - 19th Century

Our two figures are carved from softwood in the round. The Old Testament and the New Covenant find many connections.
The King of Salem has a long beard and holds his attribute: the chains of a censer placed at his feet. The Holy Woman, with her hands clasped, wears a turban. She could be the Virgin Mary, since Mechizedek, having neither father nor mother, neither genealogy, nor beginning of days nor end of life, is often associated with the Son of God. Thus, we sometimes find our two figures in the same altarpiece.
A spectacular 19th-century work in the style of the late Middle Ages.
Dimensions: 149 cm and 152 cm.
