Cardinal Deschamps' Pectoral Cross - 1875
A vermeil silver and enamel pectoral cross that belonged to CardinalDeschamps, Archbishop of Mechelen and Primate of Belgium, who was created a cardinal in 1875by Pope Pius IX.
Preserved with its original cord, the cross is dated 1875, and itscentral cartouche bears the coat of arms of Pope Pius IX.
On the obverse, it is adorned with multilobed depictions of the four Evangelistsand, in the center, a depiction of the martyrdom of Saint Clement I.
On the reverse, Cardinal Deschamps’ coat of arms appears alongside that of theHoly Father.
Undoubtedly a superb collector’s item, notable for itshistorical significance and provenance.
In good condition; slight wear on the reverse.
