A strange drawing, executed in calligraphy with brown ink. The face bears an exaggerated smile that betrays no sincerity—it is unsettling. Two small horns protrude from the front of the skull, and an elegant wing extends from the left ear, pointing toward the sky. Several very small bird heads mounted on long, very slender necks appear to emerge from the hair, on the cheek, and on the forehead. Remarkable calligraphic work—no corrections, a very supple pen, and a steady hand. A few highlights of light gray wash add modeling to the face.
A strange piece, which could be related to the “expressive heads” created by Lebrun, but in an almost satanic version. France, 18th century. Layered paper.
