“félicité” Sentiment Ring – France, 1809–1819

Delicate 18-carat yellow gold ring set with a small oval green agate, finely inscribed in gold with the word “Félicité”.

This charming piece belongs to the tradition of sentimental jewellery, particularly fashionable in the early 19th century, when inscriptions, mottos and symbols allowed jewels to carry a discreet message of affection, remembrance or good wishes.

The word “Félicité”, meaning happiness or bliss, lends the ring a particularly poetic and intimate character, so typical of these evocative message jewels.

French work, rooster hallmark, 1809–1819.
Very good overall condition.
A few minute surface abrasions to the agate. The gold inscription is very slightly worn in places.
