Marble And Bronze Inkwell Depicting "moses" By Michelangelo, 19th Century.

A black, molded marble inkwell and pen holder, topped with a bronze statuette with a brown patina depicting "Moses" by Michelangelo. The statue of Moses, created around 1513–1515 for the tomb of Julius II in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, is a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance. The Renaissance, much like the Middle Ages, was a rich source of inspiration for 19th-century artists, who took great delight in imitating or interpreting the works of past centuries.

Our inkwell features a gilded bronze cup set in the center of the marble tray. Dated to the 19th century. The absence of a reduction stamp and the presence of this simple monogram “LB” suggest that it was produced as part of a limited edition in the late 19th century. During the Napoleonic III era, many Parisian bronze casters (such as the firm L. Blanc or other manufacturers of high-end desk accessories) did not use patented reduction processes. They created their own fixed-size molds for decorative items (such as this inkwell). The monogram “LB” served as a workshop mark or commercial trademark to protect their design against fraudulent reproductions.
