Magazine Rack And Umbrella Stand Attributed To Michel Dumas, Plexiglas, 1970
◼ HISTORY & DESIGN
Set of two decorative storage pieces—a magazine rack and an umbrella stand—forming a pair, France, fourth quarter of the 20th century.
The attribution to Michel Dumas is based on the typological and material consistency of the set with the designer’s documented body of work: active in the 1970s and 1980s, Michel Dumas developed a collection for Roche Bobois made of Plexiglas and Altuglas that specifically included this type of object. We formulate this as an attribution within the meaning of the decree of March 3, 1981, and not as a guarantee of authorship.
This collection dates from the period when tinted methacrylate entered the realm of decorative design. The marbled amber monochrome finish, known as “tortoiseshell,” is part of the Hollywood Regency style that permeated French interior design during that decade and which Christian Dior’s Home collection helped popularize. The volumetric design is orthogonal, without any curved elements, with each piece treated as an assembly of planes. The crowning of the upper edges with a thin brass strip introduces the only material contrast in the ensemble and ensures its visual unity.

In very good condition. The methacrylate retains its surface luster and the clarity of its pattern. The brass trim is complete and securely attached. Normal wear and tear due to age, as documented by the photographs.
The tortoiseshell effect is achieved exclusively through a color added to the methacrylate during the manufacturing process. No animal materials are used in its composition, which excludes it entirely from the scope of CITES regulations.
