An Important Pair Of Chinese Polychrome Ivory Sculptures

An important pair of large Chinese sculptures in carved, engraved, and polychrome ivory, dating from the late 19th century, depicting an elderly sage with a long beard and an elegant female figure. The figures, draped in rich, finely engraved robes, are accompanied by elaborate floral and plant motifs, embellished with delicate touches of polychrome in shades of green, red, and blue. The faces, hairstyles, beards, and drapery are rendered with particular precision, featuring burnished engravings that enhance the warm, natural tones of the ivory. The figures rest on elegant circular bases made of dark wood, turned and richly carved with plant motifs and scrollwork.
