Large Attic-style amphora with a ceramic neck, in the black-figure style.
Replica of an ancient piece, 19th century.
  • Height: 50 cm
  • Diameter: 30 cm.
  • Condition: good condition; old damage to the rim caused by the neck (retouched)
  • one chip on the back (re-glued)
  • signs of normal wear on the black glazed patina
  • good overall condition

  • Ovoid-shaped vase with a wide cylindrical neck and ribbon-style handles adorned with chevron patterns, faithfully reproducing the technical and stylistic conventions of Attic pottery from the Archaic period (circa 520 B.C.). The decoration stands out as black incised silhouettes on two large reserved panels of orange color, enhanced by friezes of suspended droplets on the shoulder and stylized radiating motifs at the base of the body.

    Description of the mythological scenes:

Side A: Oedipus Solving the Riddle of the Sphinx.
A famous depiction of the Theban myth. In the center, the Sphinx perches atop a crenellated column. It faces Oedipus, depicted here as a bearded king seated on his folding throne (diphros okladias) and holding a scepter. The scene is framed by supporting figures (assistants or deities).

Side B: Heracles’ battle against Cycnos (Homeric duel).
A classic scene of heroic confrontation depicting two warriors (hoplites) in battle. One of them, armed with a sword, lunges at his opponent while bending one knee. The confrontation is observed on both sides by passive spectators draped in long cloaks (himation).
