Shiva Nataraja Dancing On Apasmara – High Relief From Tamil Nadu
A large religious sculpture in high relief depicting Shiva in his Nataraja form, the Lord of Dance. The deity tramples on Apasmara, a figure associated with spiritual ignorance, while his many arms lend the scene its full energy. Processional chariot panel created in southern India in the 19th century, this significant wooden sculpture was originally part of the decoration of a ceremonial vehicle used during Hindu religious festivals. A few traces of the original polychrome paint still remain on the surface.
